Market on Edge as Key Inflation Data Looms, Fed Rate Hike Odds Surpass 60%

A critical week looms for the stock market as investors brace for key inflation data that will heavily influence the Federal Reserve's next interest rate decision. With odds of a rate hike already surpassing 60%, the upcoming Producer Price Index (PPI) on Thursday and the Consumer Price Index (CPI) on Friday are set to determine the Fed's path. The market is on high alert following last Friday's surprisingly strong jobs report, which saw 162,000 jobs added versus an expected 53,000. This sign of economic strength gives the Fed more room to act aggressively against inflation. Should the CPI and PPI reports come in hot, it would make it exceedingly difficult for the central bank to avoid raising rates at their meeting next week. Last week saw significant volatility in individual stocks. Broadcom (AVGO) reported robust earnings, yet its stock fell nearly 3% as the market appeared skeptical of the company's long-term forecasts. Snowflake (SNOW) also posted strong results, causing a dramatic initial spike, but the stock ultimately finished the week up a modest 2.9%. The biggest loser was Lululemon (LULU), which plummeted 16.7% following its earnings announcement. In brighter news, Tesla (TSLA) managed to end the week in positive territory. The company's "Cybercab" event was described as strange and wasn't broadcast, but the focus remains on the technology and the ongoing NHTSA investigation into its Robotaxi service. Broader market indicators paint a picture of a market at a crossroads. Oil prices have surged to around $90 a barrel, largely due to geopolitical tensions, adding to inflationary pressures. Meanwhile, major indices like the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq all finished the week essentially flat. A potential warning sign comes from the underperformance of the RSP, the equal-weight S&P 500 ETF, which suggests that the market rally is being driven by a narrowing group of stocks—a weakening of market "breadth." From a technical perspective, the S&P 500 is trading between key levels of support at 7620 and resistance at 7816. As long as the index holds above the 7620 support level, the current uptrend is considered intact. However, a break below could signal a shift in momentum. All eyes are now on the inflation data, which holds the key to the market's direction in the coming weeks.
