QoQ (Quarter-over-Quarter)

A comparison of a financial metric to the immediately preceding quarter.

What Is Quarter-over-Quarter (QoQ)?

Quarter-over-Quarter (QoQ) compares a financial metric from one quarter to the immediately preceding quarter. For example, comparing Q2 2026 revenue to Q1 2026 revenue shows the sequential change.

When QoQ Is Useful

QoQ is most valuable when you need to spot momentum shifts quickly. If a company's YoY growth looks fine but QoQ growth has turned negative, it could be an early warning that the business is losing momentum. QoQ is also useful for new businesses or companies in rapidly changing industries where year-ago comparisons may not be relevant.

Seasonality Warning

The biggest pitfall with QoQ analysis is ignoring seasonality. A retailer's Q1 revenue will almost always decline QoQ from Q4 (post-holiday). This isn't a problem — it's normal seasonality. Always consider the seasonal context when looking at QoQ numbers.
